Alternative approach to common ailments – Arthritis.
By Eye Magazine published 1 July, 2010 No CommentsOsteo-arthritis, one of our most common complaints, is one of the most abused conditions in the western world. Many people equate it with old age. I even had a twenty one year old patient told by his Doctor that at his age he should expect to get aches and pains! One of the few things that we are told that is right, is that it is wear and tear. From our Doctor’s point of view, there is very little that can be done, other than drugs for the inflammation and pain or replacement surgery. As patients, we have now been conditioned to believe this to be the case, even to the point of, in some cases, believing that this is the start of our demise! If our Doctor tells us this we tend to believe it so.
Let’s take a look at the reality of the condition. It is true that it may not be possible to regenerate any degeneration within the joint. It may also be true that it can deteriorate to the point of no return in extreme situations. There is however, usually a terrific amount that can be done.
Nothing happens for no reason, nor do joints wear for no reason. Even if we take miners working for years on their knees at a coal face, some may end up with arthritis, but others not. So what is going on? We have a lifetime warranty on our bodies, providing we maintain a totality of health. Our skeleton is a mechanical structure, and like any other structure, depends on the quality of the material from which it is made, and the efficiency and balance of its operation. The materials that make up the skeleton are largely bone and cartilage. With a balanced lifestyle, mentality and eating habit, these materials will be kept in a vital healthy state. If not, then very simply it is those that need to be redressed in some way.
Most cases of arthritis I have dealt with, I have found that all that pain, discomfort and heartbreak has been caused by simple mechanical problems. We are designed to move and stand in a balanced manner and if we are not it can lead to greater strain being in one joint more than the other. This in turn, will lead to greater wear than the joint was designed for. The same thing can happen to the joint if it is not tracking properly or if there is even slight misalignment. Any mechanic or engineer will follow what I am saying.
More often than not, the real problem lies with another part of the body and not where the arthritis itself is. Think of the crack in the wall of a house. We know that the strain is elsewhere within the structure. The crack is only where the problem is expressing itself.
Problems like this will usually be corrected by a single Systemic Structural Mobilisation treatment, or one can go for a series osteopathy or cheiropractic treatments. Unless the origin of the problem is treated however we can become therapy dependant. Treat the cause and the effect will sort itself.
