Wind-turbine construction begins near Redcar
By Eye Magazine published 6 February, 2012 No CommentsEDF Energys plan to construct wind turbines off the shore of Redcar has begun recently, almost four years after Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council lost a high court bid to stop the development.
It is estimated that up to 30 wind-turbines will be erected roughly a mile from shore off the South Gare near Redcar, close to the recently lit blast furnace owned by SSI.
The turbines will stand at 80M tall each and are expected to be fully constructed and in-action by autumn 2012.
Together the turbines have an estimated capacity of 62MW and are expected to power up to 40,000 homes in the Redcar & Coatham area.
The bill for EDF Energys construction plans was passed in 2007 however after receiving 6,500 protests from people of the community and a court-protest from the council the construction has finally began.
The construction of this off-shore windfarm will be a first for EDF Energy who currently run 10 on-shore windfarms across the UK.
Foundations are beginning to be placed below sea level now and this process will continue until June when the visible steel-tubes will begin to be erected in view and above sea-level.
The whole process has created a huge rift in opinions throughout the Teesside community, with many people acknowledging the eco-friendly benefits the turbines will bring whilst underlying the fact that the turbines will not help the current multi-million pound Redcar Regeneration Process, claiming that the regeneration will be pointless if it is “spoilt” by the view of the turbines offshore.
Construction noise and Sea-life nearby will be closely monitored during development to make sure the turbines dont cause any problems to the community day-to-day or the wildlife that resides in that habitat.
The entire process is all part of the government target issued which hopes to cut carbon dioxide emissions and increase renewably energy sources by 2020.
