Drink and Drug Drivers Removed from Cleveland Roads
By Cleveland Police published 18 July, 2012 No CommentsNearly 1100 drivers were breathalysed during the Summer Drink and Drug Drive campaign, resulting in a total of 67 people that were found to have tested positive, refused to take the test or failed to provide a sample of breath.
Five people were arrested as a result of the efforts by Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit.
Of those drivers that were breathalysed following collisions, 9.4% were positive, refused or failed to provide. Of those breathalysed not following collisions, only 5% were positive, refused or failed to provide.
257 of the tests were administered to those under the age of 25 and 834 were administered to those over the age of 25.
The campaign included the routine stop checking of vehicles, as well as targeting activities in areas known for drink-related collisions and drink/drug drive offenders. The policy is to breathalyse any driver committing a moving traffic offence, or who is involved in a collision, and anyone suspected of drinking alcohol.
Inspector Mick Little, from the Cleveland and Durham Joint Operations Unit, said: “During our campaign we have made every effort to take drivers who are over the drink drive limit off our roads.
“Those 67 drivers who have tested positive, refused a test or failed to provide a sample will now appear before the courts to face the consequences of their actions.
“Alcohol or drugs can be a major factor in road collisions in which people can suffer serious injuries or sadly lose their lives. The safest thing to do is not to drink any alcohol or take any drugs and drive.
“We will continue with our efforts to ensure Cleveland’s roads are as safe as they can possibly be.”
