fire at UK Wood Recycling, Wilton Site, extinguished

The fire at UK Wood recycling has been extinguished.

Both Cleveland Fire Brigade and the Sembcorp Utilities fire service have been on site tackling the blaze since the fire started before Christmas.

Steve McCarten from Cleveland Fire Brigade, said:

“The fire fighting strategy taken was to control the incident while it burnt itself out.

This was seen as the best course of action in terms of safety and minimising the impact on local residents.

In the closing stages, we were then in a position to dampen down the stack of wood and the fire has now been extinguished by ourselves and SembCorp Fire services using jets and monitors.”

Councillor George Dunning, Leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, said:

“We maintained contact with all agencies during the fire and at a multi-agency meeting held on 30 December we requested further meetings to identify what lessons have been learnt and what improvements can be made in the future.

We are aware of the impact the fire at UK Wood Recycling has had on the area and obviously want to be reassured that this won’t happen again. ”

The Environment Agency and Public Health England worked closely with Cleveland Fire Brigade and the Council in response to the wood fire at the site.

Tristan Drought, Environment Management Team Leader at the Environment Agency, said:

“We have been assessing the environmental risks posed by the fire and it is not believed that any firewater run-off has affected nearby watercourses.

We are in contact with the site operator and will investigate the circumstances of this incident.”

It is envisaged that Cleveland Fire brigade will withdraw their presence from the incident later today.
