Students strike a pose in hair and beauty competition

Students turned on the glamour when they showed off their hair and beauty skills in a competition that brought fashion and artistry to life.

Judging was difficult as students at Redcar & Cleveland College went above and beyond to showcase their talents in a range of skills, from designing and creating the look on paper to perfecting the final finish on models.

Using technique and artistry, they worked their magic in a range of contests, including Masquerade Ball, Through The Ages, and Bridal.

Level 2 students Amy Ashwell, Jenny Smitheman and Rachael Fixter won the Masquerade Ball category with their model Poppy O’Hagan, whose make-up mask was so intricate and detailed – it actually looked like the real thing.

In second place were students Shelley Calvert and Louise Cawley, with their model Carmen Mallinson.

Winner Amy Ashwell said: “We have loved every minute of the competition and are really pleased to have won. We all worked on it together, looking at various images for inspiration and then working on the colours and design together.

“It took us about three hours just to do the mask, with all of the shading, but it was worth it because it was exactly how we wanted it look. It has been great fun.”

Wendy Dickens, owner of Fresh Face Beauty in Guisborough, was one of the judges in the hair and beauty competition.

“I’m delighted that I came along to help with the judging. The standard was extremely high and it was far more difficult to decide winners than I thought it would be,” said Wendy.

“The winning entry in the Masquerade Ball category was superb – the make up was exquisite. The detail and shading was very intricate. I’m very impressed.”

Delia Leadbitter, Head of Hair and Beauty Division, congratulated the students on a great competition.

She said: “The students have really done themselves proud this year. It’s wonderful to see how far they have come in their studies. It’s obvious we have a lot of very talented young people here. They prepared well and did their homework beforehand and that has come through in the entries on the day. The technical work in both the hair and beauty has been exceptional.”
