Borough-wide improvement programme up for discussion

By published 23 January, 2014 No Comments

COUNCILLORS are being urged to back plans for a £2m programme of improvements to public spaces across Redcar & Cleveland. The proposed scheme is part of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council’s regeneration masterplan aimed at securing the long term prosperity of the borough.

Council officers are seeking outline permission before detailed plans are drawn up to enhance the built environment and recreational areas, known as public realm.

Councillor Helen McLuckie, the council’s cabinet member for highways, planning and transport, said: “We need to create the right environment for people to live and work.

“Public realm is an essential part of a community’s infrastructure which affects quality of life, safety, security and perception for both residents and investors.

“These issues are inextricably linked to the economic growth and sustainability of a community and the council has a lead role in driving improvements forward.”

If approved, the council’s public realm improvement programme would include potential opportunities for community participation and apprentices.

Examples of improvements include fencing, CCTV, cycle paths, street furniture and picnic areas as well as enhancements to town, village and business park approaches.

The programme will complement other investment initiatives across borough and funding has already been earmarked as part of the regeneration masterplan.

Cabinet members will be asked to approve the outline proposals when they meet in the 25K Centre, in Redcar, at 10am on Tuesday, January 28.

However, the programme would still be subject to a more detailed plan that would require further cabinet approval.
