Lucy Stephenson, 17, and Louise Scholes, 18, travelled to Poland as part of a visit organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust which works with schools, colleges and communities to educate about the Holocaust.

After returning from the trip Lucy, who is from Guisborough, said: “I felt it was important that I saw this for myself, it’s so significant to history.”

Louise, from Marton, added: “It was very, very overwhelming. The sheer scale of what went on is incomprehensible.

“What stood out most was how normal a place it looks until you really look under the surface.”

Lucy agreed: “Once there, you just feel numb as there are so many horrific stories.

“Everything shocked me. What shocked me the most was that this was allowed to happen.”

Now, both students are planning to inform others about what they experienced on the visit.

Lucy intends to visit LaurenceJacksonSchool in Guisborough, of which she is a former pupil, and lead an assembly or lesson. “It’s important that this part of history is acknowledged by a new generation,” she stressed.

Louise is hoping to run a drama workshop at her college and make a visit to her former school, Sacred Heart in Redcar, who are organising a trip to Auschwitz.

She said: “My old history teacher has asked me to come and talk and I think it’s important that I do so they have an idea of what to expect.

“I feel that I need to tell people about it.”

Lucy is studying maths, advanced maths and chemistry and hopes to study chemical engineering at university.

Louise is taking English, drama and philosophy & ethics and has ambitions to study English and theatre studies at university.
