Crikey! Mikey’s Last-gasp Goal Earns The Priorymen Pulsating League Cup Victory

In one of the most dramatic and memorable cup ties ever played at the KGV Stadium last Wednesday, Guisborough Town knocked holders Spennymoor Town out 3-2 in extra time with striker Mikey Roberts hitting the winning goal with almost the last kick of a pulsating game.

This amazing match is sure to live long in the memory of the 200-plus fans who were treated to a blistering, see-saw League Cup 3rd Round tie which was a tremendous credit to both sets of players who fought tooth and nail from start to finish.

After a fiercely competitive first half, with the only major surprise being that it ended goal-less, the Priorymen stormed into the lead 10 minutes into the second half when the formidable strike partnership of Danny Johnson and Mikey Roberts linked up in devastating fashion with the former putting over a peach of a low cross which the latter hammered home gleefully.

Guisborough should have gone into what would have been an unassailable lead when substitute Luke Bythway scored but the goal was somewhat bewilderingly disallowed when Bythway was penalised for a foul.

Play was held up for three or four minutes following a collision between Spennymoor ‘keeper Kyle Hayes and one of his defenders and this stoppage proved crucial.  For in the fifth minute of time added on Spennymoor grabbed a dramatic late equaliser when Sonny Andrews beat Guisborough ‘keeper Luke Coddington, a loanee from Middlesbrough FC making his home debut for the Priorymen.

Undeterred, the battling Priorymen regained the lead in the first period of extra time when midfielder Adam Gell yet again proved his worth as a goal-scorer at crucial times when in the 104th minute he found the net beautifully with a great shot.

But four minutes later, just as the Priorymen were thinking they were heading for the Quarter Finals, Guisborough’s stalwart defender Leon Carling was very unfortunate to deflect in the ball into his own net following a Spennymoor counter attack.

Then, just as penalties seemed a certainty, Guisborough grabbed a dramatic winner with literally seconds remaining when Man-of-the-Match Roberts latched onto a loose ball and drilled the ball hard and straight into the back of the net to spark wild celebrations among Guisborough players, officials and fans alike.

Guisborough now face the winners of the third round tie between local derby rivals Marske United and West Allotment, who meet at Marske on Tuesday, 25 February.

Roberts’ second goal of the night, incidentally, leaves him only eight goals short of being Guisborough Town’s all-time third top scorer since they were formed in 1973. The present top three leading scorers are Mark Davis, David Onions and Neil Hodgson respectively.

After the Spennymoor game an elated Guisborough Town Manager Chris Hardy commented:  “This evening’s game was a very pleasing result for a couple of good reasons – the first being we beat a top northern league side and secondly the fact that it was a thoroughly well-deserved victory.

“Once again as on many occasions this season, we had a slow start in the game but soon came to terms with the extremely fast pace and from that point on I thought we looked the more likely team to progress to the next round.

“Conceding a 94th minute equaliser was a bitter pill to swallow, but the lads showed great character to take the lead once more in extra time only to again be pegged back to level terms.  Then in the second period of extra time the last goal of the game from Mikey Roberts proved to be the winner which saw us through to the next round,” added Chris.

The Spennymoor tie was Guisborough’s 15th cup game this season and the Priorymen are now in the quarter finals of the Northern League Cup and in the Semi Finals of the North Riding Senior Cup where they meet local rivals Redcar Newmarket at home on Wednesday, 5 March (kick-off 7.30pm)
