Redcar And Cleveland To Fly The Flag For Commonwealth Day

By published 5 March, 2014 No Comments

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council is taking part in an initiative that will see 500 commonwealth flags raised throughout the British Isles to mark Commonwealth Day.

Mayor Vic Jeffries will raise the Commonwealth Flag and read the Commonwealth Affirmation at 10am, on Monday, March 10, at Kirkleatham Museum, where he will be joined by children from Dormanstown Primary School.

It is the first time ever, local authorities and civic dignitaries, community groups and charities throughout the British Isles are taking part in local flag raising events and ceremonies of dedication to mark Commonwealth Day.

Councillor Jeffries said: “It is an honour to be raising the Commonwealth Flag on behalf of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council on Commonwealth Day.

“The initiative, where flags will be raised in unison, will raise awareness of the Commonwealth and what it represents to everyone.”

Members of the public are welcome to attend the flag raising ceremony.

Charity teams will mark the day by taking Commonwealth Flags to the top of the UK’s four highest National Peaks and use the occasion to raise funds for worthy causes.

Commonwealth Flags will also be flown at many locations of special significance including the four capital cities of the United Kingdom.

An interactive map (see link below) shows where the individual flag raising events are taking place throughout the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man:
