Priorymen Power Their Way Into North Riding Senior Cup Final After 5-1 Win Over Newmarket

By published 12 March, 2014 No Comments

Guisborough Town strode confidently into the final of the North Riding Senior Cup with a comfortable 5-1 semi-final victory over plucky local rivals Redcar Newmarket at the KGV on Wednesday.

The Priorymen will now meet either Richmond Town or Middlesbrough in the final, which will be at Stokesley on a date to be arranged.  The final itself will be Guisborough’s 100th game in the competition overall.

Redcar Newmarket emerged with a lot of credit from the game for never giving up, but the eventual result rarely looked in doubt after Danny Johnson scored twice in the first eight minutes to take his season’s tally so far to an amazing 48 goals.

Jamie Graham pulled one back for Newmarket in the ninth minute but then Mikey Roberts restored Guisborough’s two-goal cushion to make it 3-1 at half-time.

In the second half Guisborough added two further goals from Tommy Marron and substitute Curtis Round to complete an emphatic victory for the Priorymen.

Guisborough Manager Chris Hardy was delighted at the result which puts the icing on the cake of what has so far been a superb season.

He commented:  “This semi-final result ensured that we have a cup final to look forward to after a convincing victory against Redcar Newmarket.

“After a fast start to the game with two goals from us in the first 10 minutes, it was looking that the score could well have been of cricketing proportions.  But credit to our opponents, who replied with a goal of their own which seemed to settle them down.  Although the final score was 5-1, credit must go to Redcar Newmarket for putting up such a spirited display.”

The ever-consistent and impressive Scott Oldfield was named Guisborough’s Man-of-the-Match.

Guisborough were without a match at the weekend but return to Northern League action on Wednesday, 12 March with an away fixture at Morpeth.

Town have continuing injury worries to goalkeeper Ben Escritt but returning to the squad after suspension is winger Lewis Wood.

Meanwhile, Town have announced that their Annual Presentation evening will be at the KGV Clubhouse on Friday, 30 May.
