Barbering student Sam Jackson has proved himself to be a cut above the rest by making it into a national hairdressing competition.

The 23-year-old Redcar & Cleveland College student took first place in the regional final of the Men’s Commercial Cut and Finish competition, organised by the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists.

He is now heading to Blackpool next week (March 17) to represent the North East in the national competition, when he will be up against some of the country’s best barbers.

Sam, a former Bydales School pupil, of Skelton Green, East Cleveland, said he was delighted to be in the national final.

He works at Chris Wynn’s Barbers in Saltburn and said without the help of Chris and tutors at the college, he would never have come in first place.

“Taking part in the regional competition was amazing in itself, so when I actually won I just couldn’t believe it,” said Sam.

“I had 30 minutes to cut and style the hair of a male model, so I knew I had to do something different in order to be in with a shout. On the spot, I just decided to totally change the style. Luckily the model was my friend and he gave me free reign to do whatever I wanted.

“He had fairly long, shoulder-length hair, so I cut it into a tapered wedge. I started off pretty nervous, but then just relaxed and got into it. Fortunately, the judges seemed to like it. Taking part in the national contest will be an incredible experience.”

Delia Leadbitter, Head of School for Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy at Redcar & Cleveland College, said she was thrilled for Sam.

“Sam first started training at the college as a women’s hair stylist and then later went on to the barbering course and throughout his time here has really proved himself to be a great hairdresser,” said Delia.

“He is great with members of the public, too, so we knew he stood every chance of winning the regional heat. We have every faith in him for the next round.”

Sam’s boss at the salon, Chris, said he had worked extremely hard, so deserved the accolade.

“Sam is a great member of the team and has a natural ability, so we know he will go far in the world of barbering,” said Chris.

“He has done well to win the competition, but we are not really surprised because his commitment is first rate. We are really pleased for him.”
