New Redcar Pool Makes A Splash

By published 3 April, 2014 No Comments

The new swimming pool in Redcar is nearing completion as the new main pool is being filled with water for the first time.

At 25m long and boasting six lanes, the pool holds 487,000 litres of water and has been finished with 21,950 individual tiles.

The pool is being filled slowly over 4 days before being heated to the correct temperature of 29 degree Celsius and chemical filtration added.

The learner pool, which has a movable floor which can take the bottom from floor level down to a 2m deep pool, will take 3 days to fill after the main pool.

This eagerly awaited development will provide a focal point for local communities and visitors and not only include swimming pools, flowrider, sauna and steam room but also a register office, fitness suites and conference facilities.

Redcar & Cleveland Leisure and Community Heart will also be home to the boroughs new council chamber, which will also double up as a multi-purpose space that can be used for community activities.

The mayor’s parlour, accommodation for small and medium sized businesses and retail space will also be located at the Ridley Street site.

Councillor George Dunning, leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, said:

“This is such as significant step and now the pool is being filled, it brings it home that it is only a matter of weeks before we open the doors of this eagerly anticipated facility to the public.

“All of the work has been carried out to the highest standards and looks fantastic.”

Glyn Jones, construction manager for Willmott Dixon, added:

“We have worked very closely with the local community whilst building this flag ship facility for Redcar & Cleveland council.

“We have employed over 20 apprentices during the works, and over 40% of the labour lives within 10 miles of the site, so greatly benefitting local households.

“Local schools and colleges have visited the site throughout the project using this as a great live resource for many subjects including Maths, Technology and Science.”

The new £31m Redcar & Cleveland Leisure and Community Heart will open on Saturday 26 April with a fantastic day of free activity that will include demonstrations by the European FlowRiding champion, Quincy Viljtig as well as the chance to swim with Olympic athletes in the Oceans of Fun event.

Martin Miles, contract manager for Everyone Active said,

“It’s very exciting to be getting near to the time when we will take over the operation of the leisure centre.

“We have already had a huge amount of interest in our new swimming lesson programme at the centre and the free open day will really show off all the centre has to offer to local people.”

Anyone wishing to take part in the Oceans of Fun event must pre-register by calling Redcar Leisure Centre on 01642 480636.

Participants must be 8 years of age and over and be able to swim 25m unaided.
